“Price Tag” attacks in Israel and the West Bank – EU needs to strongly condem attacks – Israel needs to protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice

On 7th November 2011 Hagit Ofran, the  “Settlement Watch” director of Israeli NGO Peace Now was once again attacked and threatened with death. This attack seems to be connected to a recent wave of attack of extremist settlers in the Westbank and now in Israel itself. According to a recent report from the United Nations  violence of settlers against Palestinians has increased over 40 % in 2011. In this context Franziska Brantner, foreign policy speaker of the Greens/EFA and Reinhard Bütikofer, security policy speaker of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament declare: 

“We strongly condem the attacks on Hagit Ofran of Peace Now and the so called “Price Tag” attacks. Those cowardly acts are a serious attack on democracy and rule of law in Israel.

We are deeply worried about these developments. All democratic forces in Israel are now called upon to counter those attacks with determination. The Israeli government needs to do everything in its power to protect the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.  

In the West Bank, live and property of Palestinians are more and more threatened by radical settlers. It is indeed a scandal that over 90 % of all reported attacks on Palestinians are never followed up by the Israeli police.

Catherine Ashton and all EU-representatives now need to make sure in all contacts with the Israeli government, that those outbursts of violence and intimidation are not tolerated but countered with all determination.”

Am 7.11. wurde auf Hagit Ofran, die  “Settlement Watch” Direktorin der israelischen NGO Peace Now, erneut ein Anschlag mit einer konkreten Todesdrohung verübt. Am 6.11. wurde gegen das Jerusalem-Büro der Organisation Peace Now,  die sich für Verständigung und Aussöhnung zwischen Israelis und Palästinensern einsetzt, eine Bombendrohung ausgesprochen. Diese Anschläge stehen in einem größeren Zusammenhang mit Angriffen radikaler Siedler und Extremisten in der Westbank und nun verstärkt auch in Israel. Laut einem Bericht der Vereinten Nationen hat die Gewalt von Siedlern in der Westbank gegenüber Palästinensern 2011 um 40 % zugenommen. Gleichzeitig wurden jedoch über 90 % der daraufhin bei der israelischen Polizei eingegangenen Anzeigen ohne Verfahren eingestellt. Die Serie von Anschlägen dauert bereits seit Monaten an: Am 3.10. wurde eine Moschee in Galiläa angezündet, am 7.10. (Zu Beginn von Yom Kippur) zwei Friedhöfe in Jaffa geschändet, und am 30.10. wurde auf ein arabisches Restaurant in Jaffa ein Brandanschlag verübt. An allen Tatorten wurden “Price-Tag”-Graffitis hinterlassen.
