“The EU can no longer stand by and watch the atrocities happening in Syria.
The path for political transition requires first support for the internal and local oppositional groups to form a common platform. The EU could offer opportunities for this.
Secondly, the EU should support Kofi Annan’s plans for an enlarged contact group including Russia, China and Iran, as all key players have to be part of the solution.
Finally, a real UN peacekeeping mission should back the political process, we are not talking about hundreds but thousands of blue helmet soldiers capable of fulfilling the objectives set in the Annan plan and a possible political solution. The EU needs to advocate for this at the UN as well as to prepare its participation already now.”
